CYLINDER HEAD,VALVE
AND VALVE TRAIN

HEAD REMOVAL

Remove the Intake and Exhaust manifolds, spark plugs, wires, rocker arm covers and any other things that are attached to the head. Don't forget to mark your parts.
A word to the wise do not remove the head while the engine is hot. Not only is it dangerous but, you could warp the head if you remove it before it cools. I never heard of anyone doing that but, I thought mention it.

ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY REMOVAL

Loosen each support bracket one after another in a row, just a couple of turns. After there all the bolts are loose then remove them all. If you were to take each bolt out of the rocker arm assembly before you loosened all of them damage would result from the spring pressure.Another words you would bend the rocker arm tube.
On engines using ball stud type rocker arms.(They have no rocker arm tube but just a bolt through the middle of the rocker arm.) Loosen the nut untill you can turn thr rocker arm side ways off the valveand pushrod.

REMOVE PUSH RODS

Take the push rods out and place them in a marked holder. Like the one on the left or just us a flat peice of cardboard and punch holes for the pushrods and mark the cardboard for the front and/or left or right side.
This way you will be able to replace them in there original location.

HEAD REMOVAL

OK, To remove the head you have to CRACK the head bolts loose in reverse sequence order of the tightening sequence order. Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo , HUH! Well what it means is check your manual for the HEAD BOLT TIGHTENING ORDER and loosen them in reverse order. If you don't have a manual the picture at the right will an idea of how the tightening sequence would be. Just do it in reverse.
  1. Start at outside end top or bottom
  2. Go to opposite end top or bottom
  3. Just keep going back and forth like this until you have them all loose
  4. After you have them all loose take them all out
  5. Making sure you check if the lengths are different an any of them
  6. If the lengths are different note where they came out of so you know where they go when you put them when you put the head back on.

So now all you have to do is pick the heads off the block. There a little heavy so BECAREFUL! You can take the HEADS to a machine shop and have them rework the Heads or you can do most of it yourself but , we'll get into that on another page.
